Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically and optically identical to natural diamonds — they are real diamonds, not simulants like cubic zirconia or moissanite. The only meaningful difference is where they were formed: deep in the earth over billions of years, or in a controlled laboratory environment over a matter of weeks.

Cost

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 60–85% less than a natural diamond of comparable size and quality. For clients prioritising a larger stone or a lower budget, this is often the deciding factor.

Rarity and value retention

Natural diamonds benefit from genuine geological scarcity, which has historically supported resale and heirloom value. Lab-grown diamonds can be produced at scale, and their retail prices have been falling — meaning they generally hold less resale value over time. If long-term value retention matters to you, this is worth weighing carefully.

Environmental impact

Growing a diamond means holding a chamber at extreme temperature and pressure for weeks. Lab-grown diamonds avoid the environmental footprint of mining, though production is energy-intensive and the source of that energy matters.

Natural diamonds require mining, which moves an enormous quantity of earth and consumes water and energy of its own.

Certification either way

Whichever you choose, certification is non-negotiable. Reputable labs clearly identify lab-grown stones on their reports, and a trustworthy seller will never blur that distinction. I only work with certified stones of either origin, and I explain the trade-offs plainly before you decide.

There's no universally "right" choice — only the right choice for your budget, timeline and values.

If you're weighing natural against lab-grown for a specific piece, I can talk you through real examples at your target budget.
